• My Two Cents On Remy And Pap.

In September 2023, female rapper Remy Ma had engaged with a fellow male battle rap in what I assume to be a rhyme duel of some sorts (excuse my lack of knowledge on this genre). The male rapper had claimed that Remy Ma was having an affair with one of her artist in her battle rap league (I think his rap name is EZ). This at the time was a shock to the public eye, as Remy Ma and her now estranged husband, Papoose, seemed to have the picturesque status of Black Love. During the whole commotion, Papoose maintained silence. Remy Ma has been seen and photographed on multiple occasions in outings with her new lover EZ within the past year. Yet, her and Papoose still share a house with their 6-year old daughter.

Now, a year and some change later, Remy Ma blast Papoose for now dating 29-year old female boxer, Claressa Shields, among other alleged dramas. Papoose and Claressa have both chimed in, defending their positions.

Now, I won’t be going into all the specifics, I will link a YouTube video covering the gossip. But I have found something interesting from the commentary around the subject. If you care to know, then read the below:

A lot of social media users are claiming “Team Pap”, it’s easy to see why:

    • Papoose and Remy Ma still maintained a relationship when Remy Ma was in prison for six years for shooting her friend. We often see women staying with incarcerated men over spans of time without fail, but a man doing the same for an incarcerated woman is more of a rarity. Or a downright a myth to many. Papoose has even remarked on this disparity.
    • On the reality tv show Love and Hip-Hop: New York, which Papoose and Remy were apart of, their marriage was upheld to a high regard. The Love and Hip-Hop franchise often showcases (exploits in some eyes) relationships that are problematic, toxic, and in worse terms, abusive. Even further, most of the cast’s members are predominantly black. Seeing a black couple unrelated to that stereotype, at least to the public eye was refreshing and hopeful to many.
    • Remy Ma’s betrayal of the marriage came as an utter blow to the Black Love supporters. Specifically, a black man’s devotion was yet again taken for granted. It even happens to the best of them, ya know?

I very much feel as though the Team Pap sentiments lie in unicorn status as well as what men think as a whole. Many think Papoose was owed loyalty because he was a man willfully in a dynamic practically unheard of in society. Yes, Remy Ma stepped out in the marriage, which is wrong. And yes, I would be upset if my husband would cheat on me if I stayed with him faithfully during his sentence.

But that is why, ladies and gentlemen, you should not be involved with the incarcerated. Not because they are less than, but because there is no loyalty owed in those situations.

A man or woman who faces jail time indeed has a character flaw. I’m not here to play “whataboutisms” on the guilty or innocent, if they are in the click, that’s a red flag. A man or woman who is out of society has nothing to add to the lives of those that are in it. I think this speaks to the mindset of Papoose supporters more than Papoose himself. Him being made out to be a unicorn by the public eye has now gave credence to men who want an underdog narrative for themselves.

Like I said, it’s many woman who stay with incarcerated men, it’s very few men who would do the same. I think because of expectations. Women are expected to be loyal, in every instance. Men aren’t. So this betrayal is more gut-wrenching because it’s unusual. Also, I can’t help but think many felt as Papoose “saved” Remy Ma in a sense, now, she’s bitten the had that fed her (even though Remy was the name brand in their relationship).

We never know what goes on behind closed doors, so no relationship, especially celebrities should be made “goals”. Nobody, to me, is completely innocent in this.
